More About NCERT Class 8 Maths Chapter 9
In class 8th NCERT chapter 9, Algebraic Expressions and identities, students learn about expressions and related terminology like terms & degree. It starts with exercise 9.1, where students learn to identify terms and their coefficient for a given equation. Students also learn to classify the algebraic expressions on the basis of their terms and degrees. Expression with 1 term is called a monomial,  expression with 2 terms is called binomial, expression with three terms is called trinomial and when there are more than 3 terms, we simply call them polynomials, at least for this class. Students learn about like and unlike terms and how to add and subtract them.

In exercise 9.2, students learn to multiply polynomial expressions (this exercise only deals with multiplication between monomials)

In exercise 9.3, have questions through students leans to multiply monomials with binomials and trinomials.

In exercise 9.4, have questions through students leans to multiply binomial with binomials.

In exercise 9.5, have questions through which students learn how to use the following three identities:

NCERT learning objectives for Chapter 9 Class 8th

As per NCERT syllabus, Algebraic Expressions & identities are covered under Algebra (which also includes chapters 2 & 14, i.e. chapter Linear Equations in One Variable & Factorization respectively). In NCERT Maths book, in chapter 9 of class 8, the students are supposed to learn how to solve:

Algebraic Expressions
• Multiplication and division of algebraic exp.(Coefficient should be integers)
• Some common errors (e.g. 2 + x ≠ 2x, 7x + y ≠ 7xy )
• Identities (a ± b)2 = a 2 ± 2ab + b2
a2 – b2 = (a – b) (a + b)

How much time you should spend on Chapter 9?

If you are an 8th grader who doesn't have anyone to guide you or help you out, it might take you a week or more to get a good hold of the concepts and questions covered in NCERT chapter 9.
