 16 multiplication table

To teach the multiplication table of 16, make use of the concept of addition.

How to teach the table of 16 to kids?

At first tell the child to count 16 strawberry candies and 16 orange candies. Tell the child to keep the toffees separately on a table and let them count. The answer will be 32; tell them that when there are two groups of 16 each, we call them 2 times 16 ( or 2 sixteen(s)) and the answer is 32.

Then add 16 more toffees of different color and ask them to count again. Now there are three groups; repeat the same exercise and tell the child that 3 times 16 (or 3 sixteen(s)) give 48.

Now add another group of 16 candies and ask them: If we keep increasing the groups, it will be more difficult to count, right? So, let's move on to two digit addition.

Use two digit addition to help them relate multiplication table of 16 with addition. This will help them to learn the table as they will now know how the answers are obtained. Use this sample lesson plan.

(i) Ask the child to find the number of toffees if there are two packs with 16 toffees each.

------

 32

-------

16 times two (or 2 sixteens) give 32.

That is, 16x 2 = 32

Here tell the child that when we have 2 sixteens, we get a thirty two. Then make the child say it loud :  16 times two (or 2 sixteens ) is 32.

That is, 16x 2 = 32

(ii) Ask the children to find the number of cookies if there are 3 packs with 16 cookies each.

16

------

 48

-------

16 times three (or 3 sixteens) give 48.

That is, 16x 3 = 48

(iii) Ask the children to find the number of legs if there are 16 dogs.

  16

   16

16

------

 64

-------

16 times four (or 4 sixteens) give 64.

That is, 16x 4 = 64

(iv) Ask the child to find total number of bananas if there are five baskets with 16 bananas each.

   16

   16

   16

16

------

 80

-------

16 times five (or 5 sixteens) give 80.

That is, 16x 5 = 80

(v) Ask the child to find the total number of books if 6 book-shelves have 16 books each.

   16

16

------

 96

-------

16 times six (or 6 sixteens) give 96.

That is, 16x 6 = 96

(vi)Tell the children to find the total number of chocolates if there are 7 packages with 16 chocolates each.

16

------

 112

-------

16 times seven (or 7 sixteens) give 112.

That is, 16 x 7 = 112

(vii) Ask the kids to find the total number of keys if there are 8 key chains with 16 keys each.

16 times eight (or 8 sixteens) give 128.

That is, 16x 8 =  128

(viii) Tell the children that there are 9 pages in a book with 16 stickers each. Ask them to find the total number of stickers.

That is, 16x 9 = 144

(ix) Tell the child that there are 16 boxes with 16 pencils each. Ask them to find the total pencils.
